How to Scope an Authorized AI Agent Security Assessment
An agent assessment can touch more than a chat endpoint. A tool may send email, change a record, retrieve private documents or invoke a paid external API. The scope needs to cover those consequences before a probe runs.
Name the systems and the authority
Record the system owner, authorized tester, endpoint, accounts and testing window. Keep written permission that identifies the permitted activity. Owning an application does not automatically authorize adversarial testing of its hosting provider, model provider or another connected service.
List exclusions explicitly: production customer accounts, unrelated tenants, real payment flows, external email delivery and destructive database operations are common examples.
Prefer a staging workflow with synthetic records
A representative environment should preserve the permissions and tool behavior relevant to the test while replacing real customer data and irreversible actions with controlled fixtures.
Give test credentials only the access needed for the scope. Identify expiry and revocation steps. Agree who can stop the engagement and what symptoms require a stop, including unexpected spend or real-world side effects.
Select assertions rather than promising every attack
Map the selected checks to concrete questions: can a prompt expose a fictional secret, can a tool cross an authorization boundary, or can untrusted retrieved text redirect an action?
The OWASP prompt injection guidance describes the risk of instructions arriving through untrusted content. It does not turn a fixed probe set into complete assurance. Identify which paths require manual testing and which are outside the engagement.
Agree the evidence and the failure states
A report should distinguish attempted, completed and errored checks. An unavailable detector is not a safe response, and an incomplete run should remain visibly incomplete.
Ask for reproduction inputs, configuration versions and trace evidence where instrumentation supports it. Decide how sensitive content will be withheld or shared. A missing trace should be reported as an evidence limit rather than silently replaced by a full-coverage claim.
Define the retest before the first run
Agree the time window, eligible endpoints, number of retests and whether the same assertions will be reused. A passed retest means the scoped assertion passed in that configuration; it does not establish that every related behavior is safe.
Nyraxis provides assessment scoping information, an explicitly synthetic sample report, and authorized-use rules. Confirm the engagement details and commercial terms in writing before ordering.
